Connecting the Zybio Z3 to your LIS or EHR
A haematology analyser like the Zybio Z3 turns a small blood sample into a full blood count in minutes, right at the point of care. The results still have to reach the systems your clinic runs on, though, and where that last step is manual, someone reads the count off the screen or a printout and keys it into the patient record. A full blood count carries a lot of individual values, so that is slow, it is easy to transpose a digit across so many fields, and the record of who did what can be thin.
This page explains, in plain terms, how a Zybio Z3 can send its results into a laboratory information system (LIS) or electronic health record (EHR), and what Catenix does in the middle so that results flow automatically and quality-control data stays where it belongs.

What the Zybio Z3 measures
The Zybio Z3 is an automated haematology analyser that produces a full blood count with a 3-part white-cell differential. From a small whole-blood sample it reports the familiar count parameters: red cells, white cells and platelets, haemoglobin and the related red-cell indices, and a differential that groups the white cells into three populations. It is a benchtop analyser aimed at clinics and near-patient settings that want a full blood count on site.

How the Z3 connects
The Zybio Z3 speaks HL7 version 2.3.1, a long-established standard for exchanging clinical messages such as results. Results are sent as ORU^R01 messages, the standard shape for reporting observations, and each message carries the identifying details of a test event together with the values that go with it, structured so that a receiving system can file them against the right record. The analyser connects out to the host over MLLP, the usual way HL7 v2 messages are framed on a network, so it opens the connection and sends results to the receiver rather than waiting to be polled.
The Z3 does not need a separate vendor data manager in front of it to reach the network: it presents this HL7 interface directly, which keeps the setup simple. The interface is also bidirectional. As well as sending results, the analyser can query the host for a worklist, and the host can answer with the patient and test details for a given sample, so an operator can pull the right order at the bench rather than keying it in. Catenix speaks this general HL7 v2.3.1 interface. We do not need, and this page does not publish, any vendor-specific internal detail about how individual values are laid out.
At your site, a small Catenix gateway sits on the local network and receives the result messages the Z3 sends, and answers worklist queries where that is used. The gateway is the only piece of new hardware involved, and it runs quietly alongside your existing kit.
Results and quality control in Catenix
Once the gateway receives a result, Catenix records it in your cloud workspace with a timestamp and keeps an audit trail of what arrived and when. Nothing is retyped, so the values in the record are the values the analyser produced, and every field of the full blood count arrives together rather than being copied across one line at a time.
Haematology analysers also produce quality-control runs, the checks that confirm the instrument and reagents are behaving as expected. Catenix identifies these QC runs and keeps them separate from patient results, so a control sample never lands in a patient's record and your QC history stays intact for review. This separation is worked out from the information in the incoming results, without any change to how the analyser is used.
From there, Catenix can forward the patient results onward to the systems your site already runs, such as a LIS or an EHR. The result flows once, automatically, from the bench through to the record, and the same audit trail follows it.
Getting connected
To connect a Zybio Z3, a site typically needs the analyser's HL7 interface configured to send results over the network to the gateway address, a Catenix gateway on that same network, and agreement on where patient results should be delivered. If you want the worklist query enabled, that is set up at the same time. Most of the setup is configuration rather than new equipment.

Can I connect a Zybio Z3 to my LIS?
Yes. The Zybio Z3 sends its results over HL7 v2.3.1, and Catenix captures them and can forward them to a LIS or EHR. The main requirement is that the analyser is configured to send results to the Catenix gateway on the same network, and that agreement is in place on where the patient results should be delivered.
Do I need new hardware to make this work?
The only new item is the small Catenix gateway that sits on your local network. The Zybio Z3 carries on as it is, and most of the work is configuration rather than installation.
Can Catenix send a worklist back to the analyser?
The HL7 interface on the Z3 is bidirectional, so as well as receiving results Catenix can respond to a query from the analyser and return the worklist for a sample. This means an operator can pull the right patient and test details at the bench rather than keying them in. Whether this is used depends on how your site prefers to work.
How are quality-control runs handled?
Catenix recognises QC runs in the incoming results and keeps them separate from patient records. Your control results stay grouped for review and never appear against a patient, which keeps both the patient record and the QC history clean.
Will results still be transcribed by hand?
No. Once the connection is live, results move from the Z3 into Catenix and onward automatically, so nobody rekeys a value. An audit trail records what was received and when.
