MEDITECH Expanse is the current generation of MEDITECH's electronic patient record (EPR). MEDITECH states it has more than 20 customers in the UK, representing NHS trusts and public and private sector hospitals and clinics, with further sites in Ireland. In those hospitals Expanse is the chart clinicians work from, so a point-of-care result that never reaches it might as well not exist. The gap is rarely the analyser and rarely Expanse. It is the manual step in between.
Two things push a hospital on Expanse to connect its analysers. The first is volume: blood gas, glucose, ketones and INR across wards, theatres, the emergency department (ED) and outpatients produce a steady stream of results that someone would otherwise type in later. The second is governance: an NHS trust works to ISO 15189:2022 and Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) guidance on point-of-care devices, a private hospital is held to the same standards, and both expect every result to carry the operator, device, lot and quality-control status. Connect the analysers and both problems shrink.
Catenix sits between your analysers and Expanse. A small gateway on site captures each result electronically the moment it is produced, over HL7, POCT1-A2, ASTM or the device's own format. The result is matched to the right patient and operator, kept separate from quality-control runs, and forwarded to Expanse through an HL7 v2 results interface. MEDITECH publishes HL7 interface sets and documents FHIR R4 APIs through its Greenfield developer programme; the inbound results path for point-of-care results is specified with MEDITECH and configured by the hospital's integration team.

How do point-of-care results reach MEDITECH Expanse?
A result captured at the bench is turned into a structured message and delivered to Expanse through an HL7 v2 results interface or, where the hospital has enabled it, a supported API. MEDITECH publishes HL7 interface sets covering orders and results and documents FHIR R4 APIs through its Greenfield developer programme. Does Catenix send results to MEDITECH's laboratory module or to the patient chart?
To whichever destination the hospital designates. Some MEDITECH sites run its laboratory module; many NHS trusts run a separate laboratory information management system (LIMS) alongside Expanse. Catenix forwards the finished result to the LIMS, to Expanse, or to both from the same captured record, and where a result also needs to reach a patient or corporate client, it builds the branded report from that record. The route is confirmed with the POCT coordinator, the laboratory and the integration team during implementation.
