NextGen Healthcare provides cloud electronic health record (EHR) and practice management software for ambulatory practices: NextGen Office for independent practices with fewer than ten providers and NextGen Enterprise for larger groups, across more than 40 specialties including primary care. NextGen documents lab interfaces on HL7 v2.3 and v2.5 for orders out and results in, and publishes FHIR R4 APIs and read-write Enterprise APIs through its API Developer Portal. The analyzer in the office lab is what usually stays unconnected. That is the manual step in between.
Two things push a practice or urgent care group on NextGen to connect its analyzers. The first is volume: a physician office laboratory or urgent care center running waived glucose, lipid, strep and flu tests produces results faster than a medical assistant can key them in, and each has to be in the chart before the provider closes the visit. The second is the record: recordkeeping obligations under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA, 42 CFR Part 493) depend on test complexity, the manufacturer's instructions, state rules and any accreditation, and a result that arrives in the chart with the operator, device and quality-control status attached is the simplest way to meet whichever apply.
Catenix sits between your analyzers and NextGen. A small gateway at each site, or a staff phone running Pocket Gateway, captures each result electronically the moment it is produced, over HL7, POCT1-A2, ASTM or the device's own format. The result is matched to the right patient and operator, kept separate from quality-control runs, and forwarded to NextGen through an HL7 v2 results interface, the standard NextGen documents for lab results, or, where the practice has enabled it, a supported NextGen API. For a multi-site group, one coordinator sees every device and every result from a single screen.

How do point-of-care results reach NextGen?
A result captured at the bench is turned into a structured message and delivered to NextGen through an HL7 v2 results interface or, where the practice has enabled it, a supported NextGen API. NextGen states that its lab interfaces are based on HL7 v2.3 and v2.5 and that NextGen Enterprise can receive lab results electronically to those standards, and it publishes FHIR R4 APIs alongside them. NextGen documents HL7 v2 lab interfaces for NextGen Enterprise and FHIR R4 APIs for NextGen Office and Enterprise, with a wider set of read and write APIs for Enterprise through its API Developer Portal. Which route applies to your practice, and whether NextGen or a partner sets up the interface on its side, is confirmed with you and NextGen during implementation.
