Connecting a Boule Medonic M32 to your LIS or EHR
Quick answer
Yes. The Medonic M32 has one LAN port that supports LIS and HIS communication using HL7. Catenix connects to that port, receives each count and sends matched results on to your EHR or LIS. How orders are handled is confirmed on your unit during setup.
Boule aims the Medonic M32 at smaller hospitals and clinical laboratories. It is a 3-part differential analyser reporting 16 diagnostic parameters, plus six for research use, at up to 60 samples an hour, with a result 50 seconds after an open tube is sampled.
It comes in four models, M32B, M32M, M32C and M32S, which differ in sample handling such as shear valve aspiration, pre-dilution and, on the M32S, a cap-piercing device. All carry the same LAN port. The M32 is not sold in the USA.
| What | How Catenix handles it |
|---|---|
| Models | M32B, M32M, M32C, M32S |
| Parameters | 16 diagnostic, 6 research |
| Network port | 1 LAN, HL7 for LIS/HIS |
| Sample inlets | Open tube 110 microlitres, capillary adapter 20 microlitres, cap piercer 250 microlitres |
| Stored results | Up to 50,000 samples |
| QC on board | Tri-level controls, Levey-Jennings and X-bar |
One HL7 port across four models
Whichever M32 you have, the LIS connection is the same LAN port speaking HL7, and the four USB ports are for printers, export and accessories. Catenix's gateway sits on the lab network and takes those HL7 messages, reconnecting by itself after a network drop.
Capillary, open tube or pierced cap
The micro-pipette adapter lets the M32 run 20 microlitres of capillary blood, which matters for children and finger sticks, while the M32S pierces closed caps. However the sample went in, Catenix matches the result to its EHR order by sample ID. WBC, LYM, MID, GRAN and the rest are mapped to your EHR's codes at setup, and research-use parameters can be left out of the mapping so they never reach a patient record.
Tri-level controls beyond the analyser
The M32 already keeps Levey-Jennings and X-bar statistics for its low, normal and high controls. Catenix files those control runs as QC, grades them with Westgard rules against your targets and holds patient results for a test whose control fails. Results with no order wait for review, every HL7 message is stored with its result, and an internet outage simply means results are kept on site for a while.

Questions people ask
Which protocol does the Boule Medonic M32 use for the LIS?
HL7, over its single LAN port.
Do all Medonic M32 models connect the same way?
Yes. The M32B, M32M, M32C and M32S all use the same LAN port and HL7.
Can research-use parameters be kept out of the EHR?
Yes. Only the parameters you choose are mapped to EHR codes during setup.
