Connecting a Beckman Coulter DxH 900 to your LIS or EHR

Quick answer

Yes. The DxH 900 uses CLSI LIS1-A and LIS2-A (formerly ASTM E1381 and E1394), bidirectional, over EIA-232 serial or TCP/IP on RJ-45. It supports host query, so Catenix answers with the EHR's orders. A whole DxH 900 workcell uses a single LIS connection.

The DxH 900 is a high-volume haematology analyser for CBC, differential, reticulocytes and NRBC, running up to 100 samples an hour per analyser with the VCS 360 differential. It works stand-alone or in a workcell of up to three analysers with the DxH Slidemaker Stainer II.

It is used in high-volume laboratories.

One link for the whole workcell

However many DxH 900 analysers sit in the workcell, the LIS sees one connection. Catenix connects to that single link, receives results from every analyser in it, and sends orders that the workcell routes, including slide requests the Slidemaker Stainer II acts on.

Host query and encoding

Host query is set under Menu, Diagnostics, LIS, Host Query. With it on, the DxH 900 asks for each sample's orders as the 2D-capable camera barcode reader identifies it, and Catenix replies with the tests ordered in the EHR. All transmissions use UTF-8 encoding, which the receiving side is set to match.

TCP/IP connects directly to the gateway on your network; the serial route goes through a serial device server at 9600 baud by default. The gateway reconnects on its own after drops.

Results, QC and the record

Results are matched by sample ID; unmatched ones wait for review. Control runs that reach Catenix are filed as QC, graded with Westgard rules against your targets, with Levey-Jennings history, and a failed QC holds patient results for that test. Results are stored on site during internet outages, and every message is kept with its result.
