Connecting a Beckman Coulter DxH 500 to your LIS or EHR

Quick answer

Yes. The DxH 500 uses CLSI LIS01-A2 and LIS02-A2 (formerly ASTM E1381 and E1394) over EIA-232 serial or TCP/IP. It takes orders by download from the host, not by query: Catenix sends the EHR's orders to the analyser, then receives results and returns them matched. On TCP/IP, the host is the server and the DxH is the client.

The DxH 500 is a compact, open-vial haematology analyser giving a CBC with 5-part differential from 12 microlitres of whole blood, at up to 60 samples an hour. The DxH 500 Series includes the DxH 500, 520 and 560, which share the same host interface.

It is aimed at low-volume haematology in small and medium-sized clinics.

Order download, not query

The DxH 500 does not send query records, so it never asks the host for work. Instead Catenix downloads the EHR's orders to the analyser ahead of the run, and the analyser runs them as the sample is identified. Patient and QC test orders can both be downloaded, and results go back matched by sample ID.

Serial or network

On TCP/IP, the Catenix gateway listens as the server and the DxH 500 connects to it as the client, the reverse of many analysers, so the analyser's settings must point at the gateway's address. On serial, the DB-9 port defaults to 115200 baud, 8-N-1, and is reached through a serial device server. Either way the gateway recovers on its own after a network drop.

Histograms, QC and outages

Histograms and dataplots arrive in manufacturer records alongside the numbers, and Catenix keeps every message with its result. Control results are filed as QC, graded with Westgard rules against your targets and shown on Levey-Jennings charts; a failed QC holds patient results for that test. If the internet drops, results are stored on site and forwarded later.

Questions people ask

Can the Beckman Coulter DxH 500 query the LIS for orders?

No. It does not use host query. Orders are downloaded to it from the host, and Catenix sends the EHR's orders that way.

Does the DxH 500 send QC results to the host?

Yes. QC test orders and control results are supported on the interface, and Catenix files controls as QC.

Is the DxH 520 or 560 connected the same way?

Yes. The DxH 500 Series (500, 520 and 560) shares one host interface.
