Connecting an Abbott FreeStyle Precision Pro to your LIS or EHR

Quick answer

The FreeStyle Precision Pro sends its stored results automatically to a data management system over Wi-Fi, through an optional docking station or with a data cable. Abbott does not publish the message format, so how Catenix receives those uploads is confirmed on your meters during setup. Once results arrive, Catenix files controls as QC and sends patient glucose and ketone readings to your EHR.

The FreeStyle Precision Pro is Abbott's hospital meter for blood glucose and beta-ketone, built for multiple-patient use at the hospital bedside. Glucose takes 5 seconds and ketone 10 seconds from a 0.6 microlitre drop of capillary, venous, arterial or neonatal whole blood.

Abbott's UK material describes real-time dual-band Wi-Fi and a workflow with no docking required, while the US clearance also lists an optional dock and upload cable. Automatic upload to the electronic record depends on integration with the hospital EMR, which is the gap a connectivity layer fills.

Wristbands, strips and the right patient

A camera-based scanner reads 1D and 2D barcodes, including 2D codes on curved patient wristbands, and the display confirms patient and operator ID before a test. Each test strip is foil-wrapped and carries its own barcode, which calibrates the meter and checks the expiry date. Expired strips are locked out automatically, and the meter can allow, warn or block a strip lot that is not on the approved list. Up to 36 lots can be loaded, 18 for glucose and 18 for ketone.

What changes for the ward once results flow

Because the patient ID comes from the wristband scan, Catenix can match each reading to the right record and keep the operator ID with it. A reading whose patient cannot be matched is held for review instead of being filed against a guess. The meter's own codes for glucose and ketone are mapped to your EHR's codes when we set things up.

Glucose and ketone controls are run at three concentrations. Where they reach Catenix they are filed as QC, graded with Westgard rules against your targets and charted on Levey-Jennings plots, and a failed control holds patient results for that test.

Points to confirm before go-live

We check with your team whether the meters upload over Wi-Fi or through docks, and how the data arrives, before any results go to the record. The on-site gateway reconnects after a network drop and stores results locally during an internet outage. Each message is kept with the result it carried.

Questions people ask

Does the FreeStyle Precision Pro need a docking station?

No. Abbott describes real-time Wi-Fi with no docking required, and the US clearance lists a dock and a data cable as optional extras.

Can it test ketones as well as glucose?

Yes. It measures beta-ketone from 0.01 to 8.0 mmol/L in 10 seconds, alongside a 5-second glucose test.

How many results does the meter hold?

Up to 2,500 patient results and 1,000 control results, sent on automatically when the meter connects.
