Connecting Roche Accu-Chek Inform II meters to your EHR or LIS

Quick answer

Yes. The Accu-Chek Inform II exchanges data with a data manager using the POCT1-A standard, either over its optional Wi-Fi card or by docking in the base unit, which has an Ethernet port. The Catenix gateway takes that data manager role on your network and passes each glucose result, with its patient and operator ID, to the EHR or LIS. Network and security settings are confirmed on your meters during setup.

The Accu-Chek Inform II is Roche's handheld glucose meter for multiple-patient use in professional settings, including patients receiving intensive treatment and neonates being monitored for hypoglycaemia. It reads capillary, venous, arterial or neonatal whole blood from a 0.6 microlitre sample and measures in about five seconds.

On a busy ward the meter is rarely in one place, which is why its connection matters as much as its strip. Each test is tied to a scanned operator and patient, and the meter can refuse to test until controls are run or data has been uploaded.

Wi-Fi card or base unit: two routes to the same place

Meters with the RF card send each result over Wi-Fi as soon as the operator confirms it. Meters without one hand their stored data over infrared when docked in the Accu-Chek Inform II Base Unit, which reaches the network by Ethernet. Note that the Base Unit Light version only charges the meter and does not communicate.

Roche quotes a full upload over Wi-Fi of up to 2,000 results, 100 reagent records and 500 operator records in under 15 minutes. Whichever route you use, Catenix stores every message with its result and keeps results on site if the clinic's internet drops, forwarding them later.

Download Lockout and patient lists

The Inform II can be set so that a meter which has not uploaded within a set interval locks itself until it is docked or reaches Wi-Fi. For emergencies, a limited number of STAT tests can still be run while locked. Patient lists downloaded from the data manager let the meter check a scanned wristband against expected patients.

Operator IDs of up to 20 characters can be scanned or typed, and barcode masks strip unwanted characters from wristband and badge codes. Catenix keeps the operator ID with each glucose result it receives.

Glucose controls on the Inform II

With QC Lockout on, patient testing stops until the scheduled controls pass. When control results reach Catenix they are filed as QC, graded with Westgard rules against your targets and charted on Levey-Jennings plots, and a failed control holds patient glucose results until it is resolved. Glucose results without a known patient wait for review.

Questions people ask

Does the Accu-Chek Inform II need the base unit to connect?

Not if the meter has the optional Wi-Fi card. Without it, results move when the meter is docked in the full Accu-Chek Inform II Base Unit, which has an Ethernet port.

What is Download Lockout on the Inform II?

A setting that locks a meter for testing if it has not uploaded its stored data within a set time. Docking it or reaching Wi-Fi clears the lock.

Can ward staff scan the patient wristband?

Yes. The built-in laser scanner reads patient and operator barcodes, and the meter can check patient IDs against a downloaded list.
