Connecting a Werfen Hemochron Signature Elite to your LIS or EHR

Quick answer

Yes. Werfen describes the Signature Elite as POCT1-A compliant, with a direct Ethernet connection to information systems. Catenix receives its ACT, PT and APTT results, keeps the operator ID with each one and sends them to your EHR or LIS. Network settings are confirmed on your instruments during setup.

The Hemochron Signature Elite is a battery-powered handheld for whole blood clotting tests at the bedside. Its menu is ACT+, ACT-LR, PT, citrate PT, APTT and citrate APTT, run on fresh or citrated whole blood in single-use cuvettes, with PT reported as an INR from 0.8 to 10.0.

Werfen lists it for the cardiovascular theatre, cardiac catheter lab, interventional neuroradiology, emergency department, intensive care and the anticoagulation clinic, so one fleet can span very different teams.

Theatre, cath lab and clinic on one fleet

An ACT during bypass and an INR in the anticoagulation clinic come off the same instrument but go to very different places in the record. Catenix maps each Signature Elite test to the right EHR code during setup, so ACT+, ACT-LR, PT and APTT each land where clinicians expect them. Patient ID is scanned or keyed in for each test, and results without a matching patient are held for review.

Lockouts already built into the handheld

The analyser runs automatic internal electronic QC and locks out testing when QC fails or has expired, and it also refuses expired cuvettes. Operators are tracked and can be locked out. The 2005 clearance lists two QC levels every eight hours, by electronic or liquid controls.

Liquid control results that come through to Catenix are kept as QC, graded with Westgard rules and shown on Levey-Jennings charts. A failed control holds patient results for that test.

Over Ethernet with POCT1-A

Because the instrument speaks POCT1-A on the network, the Catenix gateway listens for it on your LAN. It reconnects by itself if the network drops and keeps results on site during an internet outage, forwarding them later. Every POCT1-A message is kept with the result it delivered.
