Connecting a Roche CoaguChek XS Pro to your EHR or LIS

Quick answer

Yes. Roche documents that the CoaguChek XS Pro exchanges data using the POCT1A standard through its optional Handheld Base Unit. The meter talks to the base unit by infrared, and the base unit joins your network over Ethernet, where the Catenix gateway receives each INR result and passes it to the EHR or LIS. Base unit network settings are confirmed during setup.

The CoaguChek XS Pro is the professional version of Roche's handheld PT/INR meter, used for anticoagulation testing at the point of care. A drop of at least 8 microlitres of fresh capillary blood, or non-anticoagulated venous blood, gives an INR in about one minute. Results can show as INR alone, INR with seconds, or INR with %Quick.

What sets the Pro apart from a patient's home meter is its identity handling. It has a barcode scanner on the side for patient and operator IDs, an administrator ID that protects settings, and memory for 2,000 patient results and 500 QC results.

The Handheld Base Unit does the networking

On its own the XS Pro has no network connection. The optional Handheld Base Unit charges the meter and carries its data: the meter sends over infrared, and the base unit forwards either by USB to a single computer or by Ethernet to a host system. For a clinic connection, the Ethernet route is the one Catenix uses.

Because results build up in memory between dockings, it helps to agree a docking routine with staff. Every message Catenix receives is kept with its INR result, so a late upload is easy to trace.

Patient lists, operator lists and lockouts

A data manager can load operator lists and lists of patients due for testing onto the meter, so IDs are picked or scanned rather than typed. Roche notes that Operator Lockout is only available when operator lists come from a data manager. QC Lockout works on the meter itself.

Each stored INR carries date, time, patient ID and, when enabled, operator ID. Catenix keeps that operator ID with the result and holds any INR without a matching patient for review.

INR controls

Every XS Pro strip runs its own on-board control, and liquid controls are optional. Where liquid control results reach Catenix, they are filed as QC, graded with Westgard rules and plotted on Levey-Jennings charts, and a failed control holds patient INR results.

Questions people ask

Can the CoaguChek XS Pro connect without the base unit?

No. Its connection to a computer or network runs through the optional Handheld Base Unit, which links to the meter by infrared.

Does the XS Pro record who ran the test?

Yes, when operator ID is enabled. The ID is stored with the result and Catenix keeps it with the INR it sends on.

Is operator lockout available on the XS Pro?

Only with operator lists created on a data manager and loaded onto the meter. QC Lockout can be set on the meter alone.
