Connecting a Roche CoaguChek Pro II to your EHR or LIS
Quick answer
Yes. The CoaguChek Pro II supports data exchange using the POCT1-A standard, sent either over WLAN on meters that have it or through the optional Handheld Base Unit on Ethernet. The Catenix gateway receives PT/INR and aPTT results from either route and sends them on to the EHR or LIS with the patient and operator attached.
The CoaguChek Pro II brings two clotting tests to the bedside. PT/INR takes about a minute and aPTT under five minutes, both from at least 8 microlitres of capillary, venous or arterial fresh whole blood. That makes it a fit for wards, theatres and emergency areas where heparin therapy needs watching as well as warfarin.
Which tests are switched on depends on the country, as Roche releases parameters market by market.
| What | How Catenix handles it |
|---|---|
| Tests | PT/INR (about 1 min) and aPTT (under 5 min) |
| Sample | 8 uL or more, capillary, venous or arterial whole blood |
| Measuring range | INR 0.8 to 8.0; aPTT 20 to 130 seconds |
| Connection | WLAN with TLS, or Handheld Base Unit over Ethernet or USB |
| Lists on meter | Up to 5,000 operator IDs and 4,000 patient IDs |
| Memory | 2,000 patient and 500 QC results |
WLAN meters and docked meters
Pro II meters with WLAN send results over the hospital's wireless network, encrypted with TLS. Meters without it pass data over infrared to the Handheld Base Unit, which forwards to the network over Ethernet. Many sites run a mix, and Catenix accepts results from both.
Battery life matters for aPTT: a full pack gives roughly 60 PT tests but only around 20 aPTT tests, so a base unit near the bedside area is still useful even on WLAN.
QR codes as a fallback
The Pro II can also show a result as a QR code. In plain-text mode a 2D scanner at a PC types the result straight into an application. This is handy in a pinch, but it bypasses the audit trail, so for routine work we recommend the POCT1-A route, where Catenix keeps each message alongside the result and holds anything without a matching patient for review.
Lockouts, operators and controls
QC Lockout is off by default on the Pro II and has to be switched on. Operator lockout relies on operator lists loaded from a data manager. Liquid control results that reach Catenix are filed as QC, graded with Westgard rules and charted on Levey-Jennings plots, and a failed control holds patient results for that test.

Questions people ask
Does Catenix receive aPTT as well as PT/INR from the Pro II?
Yes. Both tests travel the same way, and each is mapped to its own EHR code during setup.
Is the base unit needed on WLAN meters?
Not for data. WLAN meters can send results directly. The base unit still charges the meter and serves meters without WLAN.
Can the Pro II show a QR code instead?
Yes, it can display a result as a QR code for scanning at a PC. The direct POCT1-A connection keeps a fuller audit trail.
