Connecting a Tosoh AIA-360 to your LIS or EHR
Quick answer
Yes, for results. The AIA-360 sends results to a host over ASTM E1381 and E1394 on an RS-232C serial port, but it does not query the host or accept orders. Tests are selected on the analyser, and Catenix matches each result to its EHR order by sample ID before sending it to your EHR or LIS.
The AIA-360 is a compact benchtop fluorescence enzyme immunoassay analyser using unit-dose AIA-PACK test cups. It runs 36 tests an hour, with 25 sample and 25 test-cup positions and up to four tests per sample. Its menu includes troponin I, BNP and a fertility panel including hCG.
Small hospitals, physician office labs, cardiac and specialty testing services and satellite labs use it, and it often backs up a larger Tosoh analyser.
| What | How Catenix handles it |
|---|---|
| Interface | ASTM E1381-91 (low level) and E1394-91 (records) |
| Physical link | RS-232C, D-SUB 9 socket; 1200 to 19200 bps |
| Orders | Results only: no host query, no order download |
| Records sent | Header, patient, order, result, terminator |
| Throughput | 36 tests/hour; up to 4 tests per sample |
| Barcodes | Code39, Code128, ITF, NW-7, JAN; manual ID entry also possible |
A results-only connection, stated plainly
The AIA-360 does not ask the host for work, so tests are programmed on the analyser. Catenix still removes the retyping: it matches each incoming result to the EHR order by sample ID and sends it on. Results with no matching order wait for review rather than being lost. Barcoded samples make matching reliable; manually entered IDs must match the accession exactly.
COMM screen options to decide on
Several output options change what Catenix receives. LOT NUMBER TRANS (software 1.11 and later) adds the reagent lot to the test ID. RATE RS232C OUT adds a second result record with the kinetic rate in nM/s. From software 1.20, you can choose how no-result and below or above range results are sent. Each test ID carries the analyte code (000 to 999) and the dilution.
Only the highest-priority flag is sent with a result, so Catenix shows that flag as received. We agree these settings with your team and map analyte codes to EHR codes at setup.
Serial link, QC and the audit trail
The RS-232C port reaches the Catenix gateway through a serial device server. The gateway reconnects on its own after a network drop and stores results on site during an internet outage. Where control runs arrive, they are filed as QC, graded with Westgard rules and held apart from patient results, with a failed QC holding patient results for that test. Every message is kept with its result.

Questions people ask
Can the Tosoh AIA-360 download orders from an EHR?
No. The AIA-360 is results-only: it does not query the host. Tests are selected on the analyser and Catenix matches results to orders by sample ID.
Can the AIA-360 send the reagent lot number with results?
Yes, on software 1.11 and later, with LOT NUMBER TRANS turned on in the COMM screen.
What serial settings does the AIA-360 use?
RS-232C, asynchronous half duplex, 1200 to 19200 bps, with selectable data bits, parity and stop bits, on a 9-pin D-SUB socket.
