Connecting a Siemens Stratus CS 200 to your LIS or EHR
Quick answer
Yes. Siemens describes the Stratus CS 200 as bidirectional through its network connection and unidirectional through its serial port. Catenix can sit on either link, file controls as QC and send troponin and other cardiac results to your EHR or LIS. The message format is confirmed on your analyser during setup, since the specification does not name it.
The Stratus CS 200 Acute Care is a benchtop immunoassay analyser for near-patient cardiac testing. It takes whole blood straight from the collection tube, spins it to plasma on board and returns a first result in as fast as 14 minutes, or four tests in as fast as 26.
Its menu covers troponin I, CKMB, NT-proBNP, D-dimer, hsCRP, myoglobin and beta-hCG. Siemens notes it is not for sale in the US, and it can sit on a bench or a freestanding workstation in the acute area.
| What | How Catenix handles it |
|---|---|
| Assays | Troponin I, CKMB, NT-proBNP, D-dimer, hsCRP, myoglobin, beta-hCG |
| Sample | Whole blood in heparin tubes; citrate for D-dimer |
| Turnaround | First result in as fast as 14 minutes |
| Network link | Bidirectional |
| Serial link | Results only |
| Unsent results | Last 50 patient results kept for later transmission |
Network or serial: what each gives you
The serial port only pushes results out, which suits a simple feed through a serial device server. The network connection is two-way, and Siemens says that link lets a data manager lock users out directly. If the analyser cannot send, it keeps the last 50 patient results for transmission later.
With Catenix on the network side, results are matched to the patient by ID and mapped from the analyser's assay codes to your EHR's codes during setup.
Controlling who runs a troponin
The analyser stores up to 500 operator IDs and refuses anyone not on the list. A daily electronic system check carries a programmable time lockout, and the analyser raises a QC Required alert on a time or range rule. Advanced set-up is password protected, and the printout partly masks the operator ID.
Catenix records which operator produced each result, so the audit trail follows the troponin all the way to the record.
Liquid controls and patient holds
Liquid controls run after calibration, when a previously calibrated reagent lot arrives, or on your own schedule. When they reach Catenix they are filed as QC, checked with Westgard rules and plotted on Levey-Jennings charts. If a control fails, patient results for that assay are held. The gateway reconnects after a network drop, keeps each message with its result, and stores results locally during an internet outage.

Questions people ask
Is the Stratus CS 200 bidirectional?
Over its network connection, yes. The serial port is unidirectional and sends results only.
Does it need plasma?
No. It accepts whole blood in the collection tube and separates it on board.
Is the Stratus CS 200 sold in the US?
Siemens' specification states it is not available for sale in the US.
