Connecting an ACON Mission U120 to your LIS or EHR

Quick answer

Yes. The Mission U120 can transfer results to an external computer or LIS through its RS232C or USB port, using a cable sold separately. Catenix receives those results, matches them to the patient by ID and passes them to your EHR or LIS. The message format is confirmed on your unit during setup.

The Mission U120 is ACON's semi-automatic urine strip reader. It reads Mission Urinalysis Reagent Strips by reflectance photometry after a one-minute incubation, with strips of 1 to 11 parameters that can include microalbumin, creatinine and ascorbic acid.

It is 510(k) cleared and CLIA waived in the US when used with Mission strips and Mission Urine Controls, which lets sites holding a CLIA Certificate of Waiver run it. It manages 60 tests an hour one strip at a time, or 120 an hour in continuous mode.

One serial port, two possible uses

ACON lists the U120's RS232C port for either the optional barcode reader or data transfer, and gives a separate USB port for data. If your clinic wants scanned IDs, it makes sense to plan for results to leave over USB, or to check during setup how your unit shares that serial port. When the serial route is used, the Catenix gateway reaches it through a serial device server on the clinic network.

Getting the right result onto the right chart

Patient and operator IDs can be typed on the keypad or read from Code 128, Code 39, Codabar, EAN, Interleave 25 or UPC barcodes. Catenix uses the patient ID to find the order in the EHR and keeps the operator ID with the result. A strip read with no matching order is parked for review rather than filed against a guess.

During setup we map each U120 parameter to the code your EHR expects, so leukocytes, nitrite or microalbumin land in the right field.

Routine, STAT and QC runs

Each test on the U120 is tagged as Routine, STAT or QC. Runs tagged QC with Mission Urine Controls are filed by Catenix as quality control, never as patient results, and a failed control holds patient results for that test until reviewed. The gateway keeps every message with its result and holds results on site if the clinic's internet drops.
