Connecting an Abbott ARCHITECT c8000 to your LIS or EHR

Quick answer

Yes. The ARCHITECT c8000 has a bidirectional RS-232 serial interface using ASTM E1381 and E1394, with a host query option. With host query on, Catenix answers each barcoded sample with the tests ordered in your EHR, then returns matched results to the EHR or LIS.

The ARCHITECT c8000 is the mid-sized model of Abbott's three ARCHITECT chemistry analysers (c4000, c8000, c16000), which are sized to a lab's test volume. It runs up to 1,200 tests an hour using photometric, potentiometric and turbidimetric methods, with integrated ISE for sodium, potassium and chloride.

It holds 215 samples and up to 121 refrigerated reagent positions.

One interface across the ARCHITECT family

The c8000 shares its host interface with the other ARCHITECT systems, including the c4000, c16000, the i-series and the ci integrated systems. If your lab runs more than one ARCHITECT, the same approach applies to each, with test codes mapped to the EHR's codes per system.

Host query on the c8000

The host query option lets the c8000 ask for each sample's tests when it reads the barcode. Catenix replies with what was ordered in the EHR. If host query is not turned on, tests are selected at the analyser and Catenix matches the results to their orders by sample ID.

The RS-232 port is put on the network with a serial device server. The gateway reconnects after a drop and stores results on site during an internet outage.

Results and QC in Catenix

Control runs that reach Catenix are filed as QC, graded with Westgard rules against your targets and charted on Levey-Jennings plots; a failed QC holds patient results for that test. Every message is kept with its result for the audit trail, and unmatched results wait for review.

Questions people ask

Does the ARCHITECT c8000 support host query?

Yes, as an option on its bidirectional RS-232 interface. Catenix answers with the EHR's orders.

Which protocol does the c8000 use?

ASTM E1381 for the link and E1394 for the records, over RS-232 serial.

Is the c8000 interface different from the i2000SR's?

No. The ARCHITECT systems share the same host interface specification.
