Connecting a Werfen GEM Premier 3500 to your LIS or EHR
Quick answer
Yes. Instrumentation Laboratory documents ASTM or HL7 transmission from the GEM Premier 3500 over a wired or wireless connection, with Ethernet and three RS-232 ports on the back. The Catenix gateway receives those messages, matches each blood gas to its patient and sends it to your EHR or LIS. Which protocol and port your unit uses is confirmed during setup.
The GEM Premier 3500 is a cartridge blood gas analyser for any point-of-care location or laboratory. It measures pH, pCO2, pO2, sodium, potassium, ionised calcium, glucose, lactate and haematocrit from 135 to 150 microlitres of heparinised whole blood, with all results in 85 seconds.
Everything needed for testing, sensors and controls included, sits inside a disposable GEM PAK. PAKs come in 75 to 600 tests and need no refrigeration.

iQM and what Catenix does with it
Rather than relying only on periodic controls, iQM checks the analyser during every sample, then corrects and documents what it finds. The analyser keeps that record itself. Catenix's job is different: where control results are sent to it, they go to QC rather than the patient record, are graded with Westgard rules and plotted on Levey-Jennings charts, and a failure holds patient results for that analyte.
ASTM or HL7, wired or wireless
IL's specification offers both protocols to a laboratory or hospital information system, over a cable or wirelessly. A serial set-up reaches the Catenix gateway through a serial device server; Ethernet joins the network directly. The same document also lists requesting patient demographics from the HIS or LIS.
The analyser's test codes are mapped to your EHR's codes, and each message is stored with the result it carried so any query can be traced.
Living alongside GEMweb Plus
Many sites run GEMweb Plus 500 for remote viewing and analyser management, and connecting Catenix does not change that. On the Catenix side, the barcode scanner's patient IDs drive matching; anything without a match waits for review. If the hospital link drops, the gateway reconnects on its own and holds results on site until the internet is back.

Questions people ask
Does the GEM Premier 3500 support HL7?
Yes. Its specification lists ASTM or HL7 data transmission to a laboratory or hospital information system.
How much blood does it need?
135 to 150 microlitres of heparinised whole blood, depending on the cartridge menu.
Does Catenix replace iQM?
No. iQM stays on the analyser. Catenix files any control results it receives as QC and applies Westgard rules.
