Connecting a Roche cobas e 411 to your LIS or EHR
Quick answer
Yes. The cobas e 411 uses ASTM E1381 and E1394 on a bidirectional RS-232C serial port. In real-time mode it queries the host after reading each sample ID; in batch mode the host downloads new orders. Catenix supplies the EHR's orders either way, files QC results as QC and sends matched patient results to your EHR or LIS.
The cobas e 411 is a fully automated, random-access electrochemiluminescence immunoassay analyser, available in disk and rack versions. It runs up to 88 tests an hour at its theoretical maximum and has 18 reagent channels.
Typical assays include tumour markers such as CA 125 II and CYFRA 21-1, cardiac markers (troponin T, CK-MB, myoglobin STAT), fertility hormones such as hCG and prolactin, hepatitis serology and PTH.

Real-time query or batch download
In real-time mode the e 411 reads the sample ID and asks the host for test selections; if no answer arrives in time, the query is cancelled. In batch mode Catenix downloads test selections ahead of the run, and only new orders are accepted. The analyser does not query the host for control samples, so control samples are set up on the e 411 itself.
Orders with priority S run as STAT, using the STAT positions on the disk version or the dedicated STAT port on the rack feeder.
Points to settle before go-live
The e 411 has no automatic rerun; reruns are defined by hand. When it dilutes a sample automatically, the dilution factor is carried in the test ID and Catenix keeps it with the result. Reagent packs carry 2D barcodes that programme assays on loading, and we map each assay code to the EHR's code during setup.
Use a cable of no more than 15 metres to the serial device server, and 9600 bps unless there is a reason not to.
QC and results in Catenix
Because the e 411 uploads QC results with patient results, Catenix recognises control runs and files them as QC. They are graded with Westgard rules against your targets and kept on Levey-Jennings charts, and a failed QC holds patient results for that test. The gateway reconnects after a network drop and stores results on site during an internet outage; every message stays with its result.
