Connecting an Ortho VITROS XT 7600 to your LIS or EHR

Quick answer

Yes. The VITROS XT 7600 is bidirectional, with broadcast download and host query, and communicates with the host over RS-232C. Catenix's gateway, reached through a serial device server, supplies the EHR's orders for each barcoded sample and returns matched results. Message details are confirmed from the system's host settings at setup.

The VITROS XT 7600 Integrated System combines clinical chemistry and immunoassay on one platform, using MicroSlide, XT MicroSlide, MicroWell and MicroTip technologies. It offers more than 160 tests across general chemistry, cardiac, thyroid and metabolic, infectious disease, TDM, drugs of abuse, oncology and reproductive endocrinology.

Theoretical throughput is up to 1,320 tests an hour with XT MicroSlides, or 945 without. It is aimed at hospitals of roughly 150 to 4,500 beds running 600 to 3,000 tests a day.

Getting orders to the VITROS XT 7600

Catenix can broadcast the EHR's orders ahead of time or answer the system's query when it reads a sample barcode. Either way, the tube is run for the tests ordered without re-keying. Results come back matched by sample ID, and test codes are mapped to the EHR's codes during setup.

What the XT 7600 already checks on board

The system runs automatic reruns with dilution or concentration, checks samples for haemolysis, icterus and lipaemia with MicroSensor, and tracks samples with INTELLICHECK. It also runs real-time QC with multiple QC lots per analyte. Catenix keeps every message the system sends with the result, so these steps remain visible in the audit trail.

The gateway reaches the RS-232C host port through a serial device server, reconnects on its own after network drops, and stores results on site if the internet goes down.

Controls in Catenix

Where control results are sent to the host, Catenix files them as QC rather than patient results and grades them with Westgard rules against your targets, with Levey-Jennings charts. A failed QC holds patient results for that test, and unmatched results wait for review.
