Connecting a Nova Allegro to your LIS or EHR

Quick answer

Yes. Nova lists ASTM over RS-232 serial, TCP/IP, POCT1-A2 and HL7 as the Allegro's interfaces. Catenix takes the combined patient report, matches it to the right patient by the scanned ID and sends each result to your EHR or LIS. Which of those interfaces your unit uses is settled at setup.

Allegro is a compact desktop analyser for clinics and outpatient rooms, designed so office staff can produce a diabetes and cardiometabolic workup while the patient is still in the room. Every blood test runs from a fingerstick: 1.5 microlitres for HbA1c and 5 microlitres for lipids, with two cartridges running at once and most cartridges finishing in roughly 6 to 10 minutes.

Its menu covers HbA1c, a full lipid panel, urine albumin and creatinine with ACR, PT/INR and CRP. A companion StatStrip meter adds glucose and blood creatinine with eGFR, sending them wirelessly to the Allegro so everything lands in one report. Nova shows Allegro as CE marked and not yet available in the US or Canada.

One visit, one report

The selling point of Allegro is that results arrive during the appointment rather than in a letter a week later. The onboard scanner reads the patient ID and the cartridge type, the meter's glucose and creatinine are pulled in over the air, and the analyser prints, stores and transmits the lot together.

For Catenix that means a single patient-identified bundle to file. Each analyte is mapped to its EHR code once during setup, and the raw message is stored with the results so the clinic can see exactly what was received.

Choosing between ASTM, HL7 and POCT1-A2

With four options on the spec list, the decision is practical. A serial ASTM link reaches the Catenix gateway through a serial device server; the network options plug straight into the clinic LAN. We look at your unit's settings with you before picking one.

Whichever route is used, the gateway reconnects after a drop and holds results locally while the internet is down.

Controls for an office-run analyser

When staff run controls, Catenix files them as QC rather than patient data, applies Westgard rules and keeps Levey-Jennings history, so whoever reviews QC sees trends rather than single numbers. A failed control holds patient results for that test until someone signs it off. Results with no matching patient wait for review.

Questions people ask

Is the Nova Allegro available in the US?

Nova's page shows it as CE marked and pending FDA clearance, not yet available in the US or Canada.

Do glucose results from the StatStrip meter reach the EHR as well?

Yes. The meter sends patient-identified results to the Allegro, which merges them with the cartridge results in one report for transmission.

Which tests use urine?

Urine albumin, urine creatinine and the albumin/creatinine ratio, from a 25 uL urine sample.
