Already have systems in place?

Running RALS, or an EPR that already takes point-of-care results, is not a reason to rule Catenix out. Catenix is modular, so the usual first step is the connectivity and quality control layer: connect the analysers or sites that sit outside your current data manager, capture their QC with Levey-Jennings and Westgard evaluation, and deliver results over HL7 v2 or FHIR into the record you already run. Nothing has to be replaced. Quality management, inventory, reporting or billing can be switched on later if they earn their place. What you already have decides which modules you use, not whether Catenix fits.

What is Abbott RALS?

RALS is Abbott's point-of-care data management system. Its website describes a web-based, vendor-neutral platform that connects the POCT devices used in hospitals, releases results to the laboratory and patient record in near real time, manages operators and consumables, and produces reports and dashboards. It states more than 2,000 hospitals use RALS. RALS came to Abbott through its 2017 acquisition of Alere, whose Alere Informatics unit had been formed through the 2011 acquisitions of Medical Automation Systems and Laboratory Data Systems.

What is the difference between RALS and AegisPOC?

Both are Abbott point-of-care data management products. Abbott's UK AegisPOC page directs US visitors to RALS, and Alere's 2012 annual report described RALS-Freedom, its web-based product for critical care, as known as AegisPOC outside the United States. Does RALS connect non-Abbott devices?

Yes, according to Abbott. RALS is described as vendor-neutral, and its published device interface menu lists devices from many manufacturers, including Siemens, Roche, Nova Biomedical, Werfen, Radiometer, Sysmex, QuidelOrtho and Cepheid, alongside Abbott's own i-STAT, ID NOW and Afinion. Connectivity is device-dependent: some connections are bi-directional, some receive-only, and some run through the manufacturer's own data manager. Check the current menu for your exact models.

Is RALS available in the UK?

Abbott's public materials position RALS for the United States. RALS.com is a US site, its adoption figures refer to US hospitals, and Abbott's UK data management pages present AegisPOC with a link that sends US visitors to RALS.
